AA32

The Municipality of Aalborg is working towards becoming a European Capital of Culture in 2032. This is an ambition we share with our neighbouring municipalities in North Jutland, because we wish to create a capital of culture that is broad in scope and involves the entire region.

Why are we applying?

If Aalborg and North Jutland are awarded the title, 2032 and the years leading up to it will be filled with cultural events and projects. Culture will be present everywhere – on established stages, in nature, in open squares and urban spaces. And in local communities, right where we live our everyday lives.

2032 – and the years before and after

Aalborg2032 is not only about the year 2032. The process has already started and includes many steps along the way:

Applications:

Right now, the focus is on being pre-qualified for the title. We will receive the result in November 2026. If we are pre-qualified, we will further develop the application and submit our final application in 2027. In November 2027, we will find out which city is awarded the title of Danish European Capital of Culture in 2032.

Test actions:

If we are selected, we will experiment in the years leading up to 2032 with activities and events that test new ideas and unfold our ambitions. The cultural programme will be developed gradually, building towards the Capital of Culture year itself.

The culmination:

2032 is the Capital of Culture year. There will be no doubt that culture is at the forefront, and it will be visible and tangible in the cities, surrounding areas, and throughout the entire region.

The legacy after 2032:

The Capital of Culture year is not an end destination. We must learn from Aalborg2032 to ensure that the positive development continues for many years into the future. In 2033, we will gather our knowledge and experience, lay new paths forward, and report to the EU.
