In connection with the 2026 budget agreement, Aalborg City Council decided to allocate 3 million Danish Kroner for the preparation of an application (2026–2027).

The City Council has also decided that if Aalborg is designated as a European Capital of Culture, a total of 80 millions Danish kroner will be granted for the period 2029–2032, distributed evenly over the 4 years.

A European Capital of Culture is not financed solely through municipal funds. Total funding is a combination of municipal contributions, state grants, EU funds, charitable foundations, and sponsors.

The work of preparing the application is led by the Department of Culture under Aalborg Municipality, in close dialogue with the cultural sector, North Jutland municipalities, and other partners. If we are designated as a Capital of Culture, the work does not necessarily need to continue within the municipality but could, for example, be placed in a foundation. This will be decided at a later stage.
